My name Gary Parks, owner and operator of Backwoods Wildlife Control serving Central/South Oklahoma and North Texas and I created this page to discuss a common confusion in the industry/marketplace. We often get calls from people seeking “bat exterminators”. This comes from the old idea that anyone who deals with any type of pest is an exterminator (be it squirrel exterminators, raccoon exterminators, skunk exterminators or bat exterminators). The correct use of the term “exterminator” would only be in the pest control industry. Exterminators deal with insects like ants, cockroaches, bed bugs and other type. Backwoods Wildlife Control deal with bats, squirrels, flying squirrels, skunks, raccoons, birds, and many other wildlife. We do not exterminate (kill) these animals. We use humane procedures to remove them and then animal-proof the structure using mechanical techniques to ensure that they do not return.
What we do is “Wildlife Removal Services.” We’re in the Wildlife Removal Industry. Wildlife Removal is completely separate from the Pest Control Industry. Wildlife Removal technicians have a different approach than Pest Control technicians.
So the correct terminology is “wildlife removal” company. We are not bat exterminators by definition. Emergency Removal Of Wildlife Animal Last Night in Lawton Oklahoma
Received a call 2200 hours last night from homeowner in Lawton, Oklahoma. He stated that he had a wild animal in his garage and was unable to get it out. He believed it may have been a Opossum. We responded and removed the Pest Animal hands on. We responded walked into the garage and began searching for the pest animal. We then observed it to be a Opossum. Suggested Steps before and during Attic Decontamination:
Assessment - Before an attic decontamination can take place we must first inspect the structure. We analyze all entry points and estimate the manpower needed to completely decontaminate the infested structure.
Removal of animals- Once inspected, We must remove the pest from the premises. If it is a rat or mouse infestation, we must place snap traps or humane traps in order to trap the pests. If it is a raccoon, opossum, or any large animals, we only use humane traps
Exclusion - We MUST proof if you want to avoid another infestation. Proofing is critical because any missed spot will be the entry point of any number of different pests. Inspection spots potential and all entry points to be proofed.
De-contaminate - Can be a lengthy process depending on the wildlife infestation. The Attic Decontamination process is a three step process.
Disenfect In order to avoid airborne contaminates, contaminated areas must be sprayed before removal.
Once the area has been cleared of contaminants we spray the area with disinfectant.
Fecal matter and contaminated insulation. We begin removing once the feces and contaminants have been sprayed. We must always wear respirators with hepa filters and protective clothing when handling biohazardous waste.
-Reinstalling insulation we install new insulation after removal of contaminated insulation and contaminants.

We use a powerful, wide spectrum multi-purpose sanitizing spray to kill harmful bacteria, viruses, fungi, mold, mildew, etc. The bactericide and disinfectant is applied directly on bird droppings, nests etc, to neutralize any harmful germs and enable safe removal of the waste materials. We use a HEPA vacuum in certain areas that cannot be reached by regular means. By thoroughly cleaning the structure, you can eliminate the scent of their presence and help discourage their return. All feces will be double bagged into 3 mil trash bags.
Protective Clothing
Disposable coveralls, gloves, boots and hats are worn to protect personal clothing from contamination with infective organisms. We seal the glove/sleeve and boot/leg interfaces before entering the work site.
